That's right! You don't have to step outside Santa Barbara to discover the wonders of natural history. Founded in 1916, the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History serves as a great day trip for families with children of all ages to learn from the various exhibits focusing on natural history unique to the Santa Barbara area.
Areas of interest include local birds, mammals, marine life, paleontology, and Native Americans. What I find most exciting, however, is the Museum's Gladwin Planetarium. Maybe it's a nod to my childhood aspirations of becoming an astronaut, but to me, there's always been something alluring about the infinite scope of our night sky. Current shows at the planetarium include "Twinkle, Twinkle for Little Stars", "Exploring the Summer Sky", "Summer Sky for Little Dippers", "Noches de Verano" and "Black Holes". Any of these unique summer shows will surely trump painting a Styrofoam planetary model any day!
